South Brisbane Cemetery is one of Brisbane's historic cemeteries. It was built in 1866, however the first official burial occurred in 1870. The cemetery is situated in a beautiful spot close to the Brisbane river and University of Queensland campus. Unfortunately, this does make it prone to flooding during the summer season.
Burials in this cemetery have been limited since the 1960s, and it is considered to be at capacity. From what I understand, new burials are limited to interment of family members within existing family plots. Many of the graves and paths are in disrepair.
Having recently acquired a picnic basket, we took our lunch along and found a lovely green spot in the middle of the cemetery. It turned out we were being watched by a number of birds who were interested in our lunch, including magpies, noisy miners and butcherbirds. The magpies were especially friendly little fellows.
We were lucky enough to see a kookaburra, who was completely unbothered by the rest of the wildlife, sitting peacefully on a gravestone. I'm always amused seeing birds on gravestones (refer to: Black Crow on a Tombstone by Satirycon).
All in all, a very nice spot for a picnic and I would recommend it if you're in the area!
